Concussions in Youth Sports
To help ensure the health and safety of young athletes, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has developed the Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports initiative to offer information about concussions to coaches, parents, and athletes involved in youth sports. The Heads Up initiative provides important information on preventing, recognizing, and responding to a concussion.

Fall Season Recap from Art Kramer
Academy & Select Fall Season Recap (From Art Kramer DOC)
I want to thank everyone involved, players, coaches and parents alike for the commitment, hard work and dedication to BSA this past fall season. While it was impossible for me to be at every game, I was able to see many games and can say on a personal level, it was a fun and enjoyable season.
The coaches recently held their end of the season meeting where a number of items were discussed. Here are some of observations from the fall season and areas we will focus on to improve in the spring.
Academy:
1) Interview and hire two to three quality coaches.
2) Ensure players experience multiple playing positions and not be pigeon-holed in one spot.
3) Keep the focus of the coaches on TEACHING!
4) Develop a better understanding of the importance of positional play.
5) Improve technically and apply skill in game situations.
U11 & U12
1) Improve our player’s positional play in relation to the ball.
2) Improve our player’s first touch.
3) Focus on possession of the ball through one and two touch passing.
4) Improve 1 v 1 and team defending.
U13 & U14
1) Establish width in our play.
2) Teach players functions of each position and how groups work together.
3) Improve player’s first touch.
4) Focus on attacking in the final third, diagonal running, combination play and finishing
High School Boys & Girls
1) Assist players in college recruiting and preparation
2) Focus on systems of play
3) Improve our attacking in the final third
4) Become more dangerous on set pieces
When I was hired as Coaching Director in November, 2008 at the very end of the Fall season, I was able to attend a number of late season Select games prior to getting started for the purpose of meeting members and briefly evaluating our Select teams competitive levels. In the Fall season of 2008 our Select teams finished with a combine record of 39 wins 62 losses and 10 ties and our U10 Academy program consisted of one girls team.
As we spring forward to the present, I’m proud to say our Academy and Select Teams won a total of 12 tournament championships this Fall, and reached the finals 20 times. Our overall club record in league play was 63-50-19. Our six premier level league teams finished with a record of 24-16-8. Our U10 Academy program has grown to six teams, consisting of three boys and three girl’s teams. I base our improved competitive record and growth of our program to both the outstanding commitment and effort from our players and a much improved coaching staff.
Here is brief make-up of the BSA staff and a few of their many accomplishments. Michael Cox and Mark Hagen are WSA Hall of Fame members. Troy Dusosky, Kyle Lance, Tenzin Rampa, Art Kramer, Derrick Banks and Cox are either current or former professional players. Shawn Burns, Raico Poledica, Riley Mewes, Nicole Hirsch, Jason Burdge, Lance, Hagen and Banks all coach at area high schools. Bojan Jovicic and Mewes were college All Americans. Tomi Markovic was named the 2006 Milwaukee Journal Sentinal High School Coach of the Year. Pep Stojanovic was named the WYSA 2010 Select Coach of the Year. Josh Thorpe won three state championships as a member of the Brookfield Central Varsity Girls Staff. Angie Moulton played four years of college soccer at UW Parkside. RaeLee Rogers played and currently coaches soccer at Brookfield Academy.
This staff has a great mixture of experience and youth. They are learners and teachers. I rank this coaching staff among the best in the State of Wisconsin, and most importantly I truly believe they all care about their players and teams.
While I have documented our teams won - loss records, I learned many years ago to gauge success in youth soccer based upon the following. Are the players learning? Are the players improving? Are the players having fun? While the answers to these questions are subject to individual opinion, my answers to each are yes. At practice, games, camps and clinics players are being asked tactical questions, and they consistently know the answers. They are learning. The accomplishments of our teams on the field indicate the players are improving. The record numbers at camps and clinics as well as seeing the many, many smiles on the faces of our players each and every day remind me what is equally important. They are having fun!
Thanks again for a great season!
